The Importance of Listening when Networking!
Joke of the Month

Many people wait until they need something before becoming an active networker- but by that time it’s too late. Have you ever met “that guy” at a networking event who immediately tries to sell you something? Don’t be that person!

What are you doing to get more involved in professional circles outside of your job? You do not need to join a formal group to find the benefits of networking. Whether you are an IT professional, a sales executive, an Accountant or a Financial Analyst- Networking can play a very important part of your career development! You should progressively invest your time in different events and organizations- that way, when you need that job, favor, buyer, or piece of advice- the people to help you will be right at your fingertips!

Finding people to network with should be fun and easy
Some great places to look for people are:
• Fundraisers
• Business Conferences
• Dinners/Banquets
• Conventions
• Clubs
• Volunteer Opportunities
• Classes/Lectures
• Alumni Associations

Examples of the people you will find at these places are:
• Friends
• Neighbors
• Former Co-workers or Employees
• Political figures
• Community Members
• Leaders of Professional
  Organizations
• Alumni of your Alma Matter
• Business Executives

Some important tips to remember for networking are:

  • Be prepared and do your homework before the event- find out who will be there and target your audience, don’t just “wing-it.” Thinking about your goals for each event will help you decide who you want to meet.

  • Don’t be a wallflower! Smile, shake hands, introduce yourself- good networkers are individuals that approach connection.

  • Bring business cards and collect those of people you meet so you can follow up. Stay organized and keep track of people you meet at events- whatever your system may be, have handy way to recall names, numbers, titles and subsequent conversations you had

  • Follow up! Write a thank you note, a brief email, a quick phone call- anything to make the connection. Remember to always follow through with calls to action or deliver what you may have agreed upon.

As always- the search consultants here at Clovis are available and ready to assist you in your next career move- or to help you consider your options. Your professional success is our success! Contact your Clovis representative today!
